WiiWare launches with six confirmed titles

Wii DVD slots across North America glowed blue this morning heralding the official launch of six WiiWare titles.

The WiiWare rumors reported by GamePro over the weekend were confirmed this morning as Nintendo announced the immediate availability of six new downloadable titles.

The titles range form the comparatively pricey and DLC-heavy Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As King from Square Enix ($15, plus DLC), to the Internet flash game favorite Defend Your Castle from XGen Studios for 500 Wii Points ($5).

There were also a few critically acclaimed "sleeper hits" to be found in the six-game WiiWare mix this morning. Aside from the aforementioned Final Fantasy title, Lost Winds from Frontier Development was well met by critics in early previews, and made the launch window with a $10 price tag. The innovative title has the player controlling the on screen character with wind, using the Wii remote pointer.

Rounding out the confirmed WiiWare launch list is Pop, from Nnooo ($7); V.I.P. Casino: Blackjack, from High Voltage Software ($7); and TV Show King, a trivia game from Gameloft for $10.

In a press release, Nintendo said the release process for WiiWare games will mimic that of the Wii Virtual Console games, and see games released on Mondays. Nintendo suspended its weekly Virtual Console release this week to focus its attention (and marketing) on WiiWare.

THE VERDICT by Jack Loftus Jack Loftus's Avatar Lost Winds is as good as burned to the flash memory of my Wii console, but the others might get a pass from me. However, with one of the biggest Wii sellers being Wii Play, I wouldn't be surprised if something like Pop, or even the Blackjack title, were to take the crown from Square as the king of WiiWare launch titles.

final fantasy sounds good, but not worth spending all that money on the game, and then more money on DLC just to decorate my kingdom.

Lost Winds seems pretty fun, and it looks better than 80% of Wii titles... but I'm in no rush to get any of these WiiWare titles... yet.

the only problem with this will be were will wii owners save these games?. sd cards? Nintendo should release an external HDD (cheap not like the MS rip-off HDD)

I'm hoping that by the time E3 rolls around Nintendo will have some sort of storage solution to present. All they need to do is allow the Wii to read directly from SD cards, none of this copy from SD to Wii and viceversa bullshit.

They could at least let games run off an SD card that would be good enough considering the Sizes they go to now.
