Take-Two Interactive today announced that Grand Theft Auto IV has sold an impressive 6 million copies in its first week (3.6 million on launch day), totally $500 million in revenues. This sets a new dollar value record for day one and week one sales, the company said.

"Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date," said Strauss Zelnick, chairman of Take-Two.

The same honor was previously held by Halo 3 last fall, and before that, Spiderman 3 last summer.

"This game sets a new standard in the industry," added Take-Two CEO Ben Feder, "with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece."

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar Cool news, but I gotta admit that movie tickets are a lot cheaper than games, though GTA IV is more than worth the asking price in terms of value.

the only thing that sucks about GTA is its taking away from Lost Oddysey...which i am on the fourth disk but have not played in a week. Also Bioshock and Oblivion that i started to play again. And i just got the racing wheel, Burnout Paradise and NHL08...all of which i have no time for...too many games...so little time...

Maybe I'm being a noob, but 6 million copies does NOT equal 500 million. I just did the math and it comes up to 360 million, I wonder where the other 140 million are coming from.

I expected about as much. Very good, Rockstar. Now that you have the engine up and built, lets see another. =0)
