Grand Theft Auto IV jumps to top of all time high-rating list

It doesn't matter whether you play it on the PlayStation 3 or the Xbox 360--Grand Theft Auto IV is scoring next-to-perfect review scores from dozens of media outlets.

Grand Theft Auto IV Scores

The perfect game?

The video games media gushed all over Rockstar's latest installment in the Grand Theft Auto series in the lead up to launch day today, with both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version securing near-perfect review scores from more than 20 different outlets (and counting).

Currently at Metacritic, the PS3 version has a 100 rating from 15 sites, and the Xbox 360 version has a 99 rating from 24 sites.

In Games Radar's flawless review, there were a few quirks, but they were quickly overwhelmed by the size, scope and energy of Liberty City. "It does things that no other game does, it's immersive in ways that no other game is and it's one of the biggest, wildest, most enjoyable games we've ever played."

In another 100% review, GameSpy noted the graphical achievements that Rockstar North was able to pull off with the new hardware, but also made sure to point out that it was the storytelling behind Niko's journey in Liberty City that sealed the deal.

A physics refresh topped G4's praise of GTA IV, with the reviewer thanking Rockstar for taking all of the wonkiness of the GTA III series, throwing it in the trash, and making everything hum like new in GTA IV.

In GamePro's own glowing review, Chris Morell calls the title a "must-own" and... well, maybe you should just hop on over there and check it out for yourself.

Grand Theft auto IV launched today for PS3 and Xbox 360 for $60.

THE VERDICT by Jack Loftus Jack Loftus's Avatar Do you have this game yet? Why not? Skimming the reviews this morning I can see that this game has the story, size, characters, voice acting, action, intensity and longevity to be a game we'll all be talking about for years to come. Until GTA V, anyway, when Niko flies to the moon!
