Metal Gear Online breaks servers, US beta delayed to April 25th

Remember the Metal Gear Online beta test that was supposed to start last week? Yeah, it broke the servers and the test has been delayed indefinitely.

Metal Gear Online beta delay

Um, yeah, about that online beta...

Read the GamePro Metal Gear Online beta live blog here! We'll be updating like mad once the beta goes live...stay tuned!

Konami has announced that the US public beta test for Metal Gear Online has been delayed indefinitely due to technical issues, though the company hopes to re-launch the MGO beta on April 25th.

The news broke at the Metal Gear Online Teaser site, where Konami informed testers that "due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected."

"As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused," the statement said.

The delay means that schedule changes are forthcoming for the MGO beta test. Those changes include:

  • Starting date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/4/2008 23:00(PDT)
  • Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT)

However, even with the new schedule it is important to note that your voucher code will only be valid up until May 6, 2008.

THE VERDICT by Jack Loftus Jack Loftus's Avatar This is a beta test, emphasis on "test," but nevertheless this is yet another instance where online services were delivered to players in less than optimal condition. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was plagued with lag, Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2 was a mess, and now this. It's a free service that Nintendo and Sony are providing, sure, but that's no excuse for delivering schlock (having a paid service with problems doesn't mean you get excuses, either). If a game's online isn't ready, it isn't ready. You'll hurt your image more with crappy service than you will with a delay.
