Confirming reports from earlier today, Midway has officially announced Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Executive Producer Ed Boon revealed the introduction of Batman and Superman to the Mortal Kombat fold, along with two new fighting mechanics--Freefall Kombat and Klose Kombat.

Freefall Kombat has characters duking it out as they hurtle toward the ground in an unrestricted free fall. Multi-tiered stages mean that you can fall between levels, brawling with your opponent as you fall from one level to the next. The debut trailer highlights it, showing Batman and Sub-Zero punching each other out as they break through a stone wall and fight mid-air.

The second new mode, Klose Kombat, zooms in on the action with close-quarters fighting. More than basic punches and kicks, Klose Kombat enables you to tear at your opponent's clothing and execute sophisticated grabs.

These additions to the multi-million unit selling franchise come at the loss of another: fatalities. Boon confirmed that due to the inclusion of DC Comic characters, the beloved and bloody staple of Mortal Kombat fighting has been dropped for this installment.

"The DC Universe characters are some of the most popular and enduring characters in the world," Boon remarks. "By combining them with the Mortal Kombat mythology, all new gameplay modes and features, plus a completely unique storyline crafted by top comic writers, players will now be able to answer the question: what would happen if Batman fought Sub Zero?"

The answer is one intriguing fighting game that will ship on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall.

THE VERDICT by Tracy Erickson Tracy Erickson's Avatar Riddle me this: why no fatalities? Obviously DC doesn't want to see Batman's head ripped off, a fountain of blood gushing from the Bat Body. Come on though, this is Mortal Kombat. Fatalities are what set this series apart from other fighting games. Hopefully it plays well enough to make up for ditching them.

Whoa, first Star Wars and Soul Calibur, now DC Comic characters and Mortal Kombat. What's next, Virtua Fighter and Thunder Cats?

Freefall Kombat has characters duking it out as they hurtle toward the ground in an unrestricted free fall. While you can certainly beat the snot out of your opponent for a win, no word on how long these bouts last. Free fall fights could come to an abrupt end if both fighters end up slamming into the ground before finishing each other off.
Well that's....original. Should be interesting, and it's nice to see a fighting game that offers something different.

Can we make a petition or something for Gamepro to remove all these dumbass "First!" posts? Seriously.

I don't know, now that I have heard a little bit more about the gameplay modes I am no longer dead set against it, now I'm on the fence.

maybe i'm biased but DC characters are lame...seriously Batman is just a rich guy with a lot of money. spider man, the fantastic four, the x-men...marvel has richer characters

iamthegamepro
