Weezer guitarist frowns upon Guitar Hero, Rock Band

Say it ain't so. Despite having his music featured in both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band, Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo suggests that playing rhythm games is a waste of time.

"You should just play a real instrument."

"I don't get those games at all," Cuomo told Joystick Division in an undated interview published on Thursday. "I mean, I haven't tried them. But they must be fun because people love them.

"But, to me, it seems like if you're going to put that much effort into playing something, you should just play a real instrument [laughs]."

It's unclear whether Cuomo was merely being cheeky, or if he seriously doubts the investment spent on becoming an expert faux guitar player.

Multiple Weezer songs are featured in both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III, which pay artists to license the use of their music.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar True story: As an accomplished rhythm guitarist, I shunned Guitar Hero upon its original release in 2005, before falling in love with the game a year later. Whether you play a real instrument or not, Guitar Hero and Rock Band convincingly make you feel like a rock star.

well aren't all games a waste of time? Your not doing nothing productive, if thats what he is referring to. But still rock band is a hell of a party game!

interesting. many musicians have said that. i wonder if theyve ever played it. mabye if they did then they might like it. Rockband is probably the best party game out of the two to me.

They had a song called "I look just like buddy holly". How old are you? It wasn't that long ago. Weezer's a good band, they're just not main stream. Yeah, if someone can simulate doing what you've been trying to perfect for years I could see how it grates you nerves. Like Tony Hawk, I spent years skating and the damn game makes it look easy. It's not, and it hurts.

I feel the same fucking way...its not even realistic. I have been playing a guitar for 5 years, and found that Guitar Hero (haven't played Rock Band) is nothing like a real guitar. You figure how much people spend for Guitar Hero ($60 for 4 games) (GH1,2,3, & 80's) $60x4= $240, plus $50 (and people buy at least 2) so thats almost $300 (if you include tax), and you could buy a good beginner's guitar with that money.

He says "You should just play a real instrument" Yet I don't hear him complaining about the royalties they're getting for having a butt load of their songs in BOTH games.
