Nintendo smashes DS Lite redesign rumors

Nintendo put the kibosh on recent rumors about a new DS design at E3 this week, stopping just short of calling Enterbrain head Hirokazu Hamamura a crazy person.

no new DS lite

I like you just the way you are

Nintendo will be unleashing plenty of announcements at this year's E3 conference, but a new DS design won't be one of them.

The company issued a stern denial today regarding the DS redesign rumors that started circulating after Enterbrain chief Hirokazu Hamamura cited insider's info about the peripheral's future.

"We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this. We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this," said Nintendo Japan's head of PR in a statement to the Yukan Fuji website.

Previously, as reported by GamePro, Hamamura, who is also the boss of popular weekly Japanese gaming mag Famitsu, told investors and members of the press that Nintendo might use the glitz and glamor of one of the year's biggest gaming trade shows to announce a new DS model.

Nintendo's specifically worded denial would appear to have thrown cold water on Hamamura's prediction, but given the present success of the DS Lite around the world, it is no real surprise.

I'm glad...considering their Gambeboy Micro idea was a stupid move obviously. There are already enough Gameboys on the market, but I like my PSP, no matter how much more popular the Gameboy is.

If Nintendo were smart they would have let the rumor ride. That way it would be more of a surprise when they revealed their "real" surprise at E3.

I don't think that would be a smart move... I mean, anyone looking to get a DS would wait until E3's announcement, so it would hurt DS sales.
