The nation's largest newspaper on Thursday justified the Mature rating of Grand Theft Auto IV, highlighting potential controversies that could upset parents, politicians, and religious groups.

As in previous GTA games, players can kill police, run over pedestrians, and solicit hookers for a health boost. But as USA Today reports, GTA IV discourages mindless cop killing by penalizing players who do so with loss of money, weapons, and failed missions.

"Exotic pole dancers are in the game -- but there is no nudity, nor is there a hidden sex mini-game, la 'Hot Coffee,' which landed the publisher in hot water in the past," the paper writes.

Additionally, players will be able to drink and drive, a first for the series. The option to walk or catch a cab home after drinking with buddies exists, but driving under the influence will see blurred vision and sluggish vehicle controls.

"GTA IV contains plenty of foul language," concludes the article. "In short, heed the Mature rating on the box. It's not appropriate for players under 17."

Grand Theft Auto IV arrives on Xbox 360 and PS3 April 29.
