Konami on Tuesday announced it had shipped Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for PlayStation 2.
The Metal Gear Solid: The Essentials Collection features the first three titles of the pioneering stealth action series as the June 12 release of Metal Gear Solid 4 rapidly approaches. Of particular note is the inclusion of Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, a rare director's cut that currently sells for upwards of $100 on eBay. MGS3: Subsistence includes a new, MGS4-style third-person camera system in addition to other bonus content.
The collection also includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, another director's cut of the PS2 original. The original game, Metal Gear Solid, is expected to remain unchanged. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection is rated Mature and carries an MSRP of $29.99.
Meanwhile, Kotaku reports that Metal Gear Solid (the PS1 original) will be coming as a download to Japanese PS3 and PSP owners this spring. Is a US release in the cards as well? We shall see, but given the series' phenomenal success in the US and middling sales in Japan, a US PSN release seems inevitable.
