Nintendo responds to Smash Bros. Brawl glitch

Company says the dual-layer disc read error only affects "a very small percentage of Wii consoles;" provides free fix anyways.

Super Smash Bros Brawl error

I'm feelin' dirty

According to Nintendo, the disc read errors experienced by some Wii owners when they tried to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl this weekend were the result of a dirty DVD drive lenses and not buggy software.

Since Brawl is the first double-layer disc release for the Wii, a smudge or some dust on the lens can keep the title from running properly, said an entry on the Nintendo customer service page. If you'll remember back to the Japanese Brawl launch, this is the same problem that plagued that release as well.

Nintendo advises Wii owners not to disassemble their console. Instead, to have the console cleaned fill out a repair form from Nintendo's customer service website, and they'll do it for you free of charge.

Of course, that means no Wii for a while, but then again maybe you shouldn't be living like Pig Pen. Or is this all because so many Wii's were gathering dust lately? We may never know.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar My disc worked fine upon bootup, which probably isn't a good thing because I suck at Smash Bros. Anyone have trouble with their disc?
