Sega of America crooned and hollered on Wednesday when announcing that its latest joint-venture with Nintendo sold a combined 5 million copies in just three months. Who says gaming mascots no longer sell?
"With adored icons and fun game play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has shot to the top of the sales charts and is clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers," said Sega president Simon Jeffery.
In January, Mario & Sonic was the best-selling video game in England across all formats. In North America, the arcade sports compilation was one of the top 10 selling games over the holidays, says Sega.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympics was released worldwide on November 6, 2007 for Nintendo Wii and DS. The title was published and developed by Sega with creative oversight and approval by Nintendo developers.
Even when combining both Wii and DS sales, 5 million in three months is an impressive gaming feat. Very impressive. But was it Mario or Sonic driving the sales? I think we all know the answer to that question. Anyone out there play this game? Thoughts? Either way, I was wrong.
