Goodbye Sony, hello Atari: Phil Harrison named president of struggling publisher

The ex-Sony veteran will now make third-party games for both Microsoft and Nintendo in addition to PlayStation.

As previously rumored, Phil Harrison was named president of Infogrames on Monday after leaving Sony Worldwide Studios late last month.

In addition to turning the sliding Atari parent around, Harrison will be charged with leading group publishing and game development "into the network era," aka social games, both online and off.

"This is the perfect time to join Infogrames and help shape the future of Atari - one of the industry's legendary brands," said Harrison upon his appointment. "As the game business moves rapidly online I believe we have an outstanding opportunity to create amazing network game and community experiences for players the world over."

Atari will publish Alone in the Dark 5 on June 12 for PC, PlayStation 3, Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360.

THE VERDICT by Blake Snow Blake Snow's Avatar Phil is a social game ninja, having spearheaded Buzz, Singstar, and the like. Hopefully he can make Atari relevant to video games for a second time.
