Having launched Smash Bros. Brawl in its homeland to massive reception, Nintendo opens the lid on its next AAA Wii game -- Mario Kart.
According to Famitsu of Japan (via IGN), Mario Kart Wii will feature 32 courses, 16 of which are remake tracks from previous games. As revealed last year, the racer will feature Kart and bike tricks, only Famitsu says upon landing a trick, players will be rewarded with a turbo boost.
Additionally, the game will support 12-person online multiplayer over the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, using those pesky friend codes, of course. Famitsu also reported that a Mario Kart Channel will be added to the Wii menu, and that players will be able to use custom Miis as drivers.
Mario Kart Wii, expected later this year, has been considered a "hardcore" Wii game, more for its familiarity than any actual mature or deep gameplay elements.
In response to ongoing concerns that Nintendo has forgotten its roots when making games for Wii owners, president Satoru Iwata told GameSpot on Tuesday, "Nintendo has teams working on meeting the needs of more hardcore gamers. The big complaint from them now may be that we're not pouring all of our resources into that sector exclusively, but I feel that it's Nintendo's mission to make both kinds of games."
He added, "Smash Bros. Brawl is just around the [U.S.] corner, waiting to show everyone that claims of Nintendo not caring about hardcore gamers are indeed misunderstandings, but I feel like we need to go even further."
