'Streamlined' Mario Kart Wii features 12-person online multiplayer

When it launches next year, Mario Kart Wii will feature a first for online multiplayer on Nintendo's motion-sensing system: 12 racers at once.

As 1UP pointed out this week, Satoru Iwata made the formal announcement at Nintendo's now megaton status Japanese press conference. Mario Kart Wii will support up to 12 players in an online race, motorcycles and new mid-air ramp tricks that feel more at home in a Tony Hawk title than on the racetracks of the Mushroom Kingdom.

But that's not all. Iwata was also quoted saying Nintendo would attempt to 'streamline' the matchmaking process (read: no more Friend Codes, maybe?) in Mario Kart Wii. Whether or not this means an end - or at least a watering down - of the tedious Friend Code process remains to be seen, as Iwata and the rest of the Nintendo brass did not elaborate on that point.
