EA buys BioWare, Pandemic Studios for $860 million

EA gets bigger, acquires BioWare and Pandemic.

Electronic Arts (combined with private equity firm Elevation Partners) has reached a deal to purchase BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios, the makers of Mass Effect and the Mercenaries series for a whopping $860 million. The deal is the largest in EA's history.

According to the Wall Street Journal, EA will add 10 games, including titles in the action, adventure and role-playing genres, to its already massive lineup of games. With huge industry and consumer buzz surrounding Mass Effect and Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, EA will gain even more recognition as one of the world's biggest game publishers.

"This deal brings incredible talent to EA," says president of EA Games Frank Gibeau. "It puts us in categories where EA historically has not had a strong competitive position."
