A new report by DFC Intelligence forecasts that the Xbox 360 will likely finish a "distant third" in the console race behind Wii and PS3.

"Don't be hatin'," says the Xbox 360

"The Xbox 360 will need to build a strong base outside North America to avoid being in a fairly distant third," said DFC analyst David Cole.

According to the report, Wii will continue to outsell the competition through 2008, but the PS3 will start gaining ground in 2009, presumably given PlayStation's historically strong brand name and larger Japanese presence when compared to Xbox 360.

"We could have a situation where the Wii sells more hardware units, but by 2012 the PlayStation 3 is generating more software revenue," Cole remarked.

Additionally, the report claims the DS could eventually become the best selling game system off all time in five years. Currently the PS2 holds the record with 115 million systems sold globally.
