Microsoft is positioning Halo 3 as the most successful entertainment debut of all time, including movies. The company hopes to make $155 million on single day game sells in an effort to oust the record-setting $151 million opening weekend of Spiderman 3 (which is made by Sony).
Already, Halo 3 has become the fastest pre-ordered game in video game history exceeding one million sold in North America alone.
"We did $125 million last time [with Halo 2]," Microsoft's director of marketing Chris Di Cesare told Variety. "We're confident we can do better."
And they very well could for two reasons.
First Microsoft is launching an advertising blitz with companies like Comcast, Burger King, 7-Eleven, Mountain Dew and Pontiac who are also eager to cash in on the Halo franchise.
In addition, the game's unprecedented $130 legendary edition could help Microsoft reach its goal, even if they only sell the same number of copies as Halo 2.
"I caution the comparison [with movies] at times," Di Cesare said. "I recognize it's not apples to apples. But it's big business any way you cut it."
Indeed.
