Sony's PS2 is still the most widely played game console according to a new study by Nielsen suggesting that older systems continue to garner the most play time.

The PS2 accounted for 42% of all playing time during the month of June, followed by 17% for the original Xbox, 8% for the Xbox 360, 6% for the GameCube, 4% on Wii, and just 1.5% on the PS3. It is estimated that more than 68 million people played console video games last month.

Despite the buzz and popularity surrounding new generation systems, older consoles easily outnumber newer ones. Combined, the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube have sold more than 160 million units worldwide. By comparison, 360, Wii, and PS3 have sold a combined 23 million units worldwide.

Nielsen, which sampled more than 30,000 individuals, also found that Wii households typically earn more than $100,000 a year, this despite the console's inexpensive $250 price.
