Blizzard announced on Tuesday that their widely-popular World of Warcraft MMORPG has surpassed the 9 million subscriber mark, an unprecedented number for an MMO game.
"We're thrilled that gamers around the world have continued to embrace World of Warcraft so enthusiastically," said Blizzard president Mike Morhaime in a statement. "We've worked hard to provide a compelling experience for our players, and we plan to continue updating the game with exciting new content for them to enjoy for many years to come."
The company is set to release The Burning Crusade expansion pack for mainland China in the coming months and expects an influx of new and returning subscribers as a result.
Since first debuting in North America on November 23, 2004, World of Warcraft has become the most popular global MMORPG of all time. It has been widely criticized as one of the most addicting games ever made with some reports pinning addiction rates as high as 40% of its players.
GamePro gave the game a 4.5/5 review score last November.
