Sony was not immediately available for comment when asked by GamePro if a slight price drop would also affect the North American release of the new PSP, if even an $8-10 one as seen in Japan.

The move is expected to boost PSP sales which have been "outshone by the DS" says Reuters.

As of March 31, Sony had shipped 25 million PSP units worldwide. By comparison, Nintendo has sold a reported 40 million DS units worldwide.

The revamped PSP, which was unveiled at E3 last week, is 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than its predecessor. It also features HD video/audio out.

Update: Sony confirmed in an email that the new PSP will launch in the US for $169 this September as announced at E3.
