A Sega executive said on Monday that Sony would need to slash the price of the PS3 by the end of the year to stimulate low demand due to a decline in exclusive games.
Sonic says watch for falling prices
"Name brand, price and software are what count," said Sega's corporate director Masanao Maeda in an interview with Reuters after news broke that Wii outsold the PS3 by a factor of 6 to 1 in Japan last month. "Since it's getting difficult to make software availability a differentiating factor, superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony," the Sega official said.
Maeda isn't the first to decry the value of the exclusive. Several analysts agreed in a report by Gamasutra that exclusive games are less relevant today than they once were as it has become increasingly more difficult for third-party developers to benefit when a game's reach is limited.
News reports, developers, and outspoken gamers have all blamed the console's high price and lack of compelling games (usually in that order) for waning PS3 demand.
