Nintendo has finally announced in a press release today that their much awaited DS game, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, will be made available to North American audiences starting on October 1st. The company also made claims that this de facto sequel to The Wind Waker will contain intuitive new controls unlike anything that the long-running Zelda series has ever seen.
"Since 1987 The Legend of Zelda franchise has sold more than 52 million units worldwide," says Nintendo of America's George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass stays true to the richness of the console Zelda franchise while introducing new controls that allow veterans and first-time gamers to become fully immersed in the adventure."
The entire game can be played simply with the stylus and touch screen
As an example of these revitalized controls, the announcement states that the entire game can be played simply by manipulating the DS's unique touch screen. Players can attack enemies by merely tapping them with the stylus and can even draw simple paths on the screen to direct boomerangs and other tools.
But while the game's single player mode may be alluring enough to pull all manners of gamer into its clutches, Phantom Hourglass will also feature an original two-player versus mode. After linking with another DS via a local or Wi-Fi connection, both players will engage in a classic Pac-Man style battle in which one player assumes the role of Link while the other assumes the role of the monsters sent to deter him.
Nintendo has also announced a special bonus for customers that plan to register both their game and their DS on MyNintendo.com. In return for filling out a short survey, registered owners of Phantom Hourglass will receive an exclusive stylus molded into the shape of a quill pen similar to an actual item within the game. The company notes, however, that this promotion will only continue until supplies last.
