After a handful of delays, Sony has announced the Friday release of two new online maps for Resistance: Fall of Man, as well as an update tweaking gameplay and allowing worldwide servers for multiplayer matches of all shapes and sizes.

In a PlayStation.Blog post on Thursday, SCEA line producer Greg Phillips announced the release today of a new Resistance: Fall of Man map pack, which would be accompanied by a game content update. According to the Phillips, the total package is set for availability over the PlayStation Network by "early afternoon PST". This announcement comes after another three week delay earlier this month, which kept ravenously anticipatory PS3 owners from engaging in worldwide firefights.
The Chimera may actually be "aliens" now -- at least when you play online.
The pack contains two maps: Westmorland and Camborne, both of which are in England. The former features a snowy backdrop and Chimeran architecture, while the latter offers both above ground and subterranean battlegrounds, adding a new twist to team battles. The single map pack will cost $7.99 to download.
The free content update will enable access to the worldwide servers, allowing any online Resistance player to challenge another located anywhere in the world. Gamers will still have the option to restrict their online competitors to a specific region, however, should they prefer to play with or against those who speak the same language.
Other changes include the ability to access the cross media bar from the game's lobby, allowing players to message people from their friends list on the PlayStation Network. In addition, the update includes a new reporting tool for unruly players, a time penalty for repeated ranked game dropouts, and numerous other tweaks and additions.
