Pirates of the Burning Sea, the MMOG from the minds of Flying Lab Software, has been picked up for distribution by Sony Online Entertainment, according to a recent Sony press release. All sales, marketing, and publishing duties will be handled by SOE's Platform Publishing label, which has games such as Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising and GripShift stamped firmly on its resume.

"Platform Publishing and SOE possess a level of expertise and success in sales, marketing and distribution that makes them the perfect co-publisher for Pirates of the Burning Sea," said Russell Williams, CEO of Flying Lab Software. "This relationship will allow us their world-class expertise in marketing, distribution, and billing so we can focus on developing an amazing swashbuckling adventure for the pirate in all of us -- and building a community of players who will live that life for years to come."

The developers at Flying Lab hope to offer some much-needed variety to the MMO community with their game, which allows you to play as a naval officer or privateer in the name of France, Spain, or England, or offers you the option of fending for yourself as an independent pirate or merchant. Within the game, players can engage in real time naval battles complete with the smoke and fire of cannon blasts, or they can get up close and personal with sword duels that allow for three different styles of swordplay. And for the pacifist gamer, players can also manipulate the game's economy to their advantage, and establish a naval empire that spans the far reaches of the Caribbean Sea.

Although Pirates of the Burning Sea stil has yet to receive an exact release date, the game is expected to be released before the end of 2007. In the meantime, Flying Lab and SOE plan to make a big splash with the game at next month's E3 Business Summit.
