"Spread" the word, everyone. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the legendary 2-D shooter Contra, Konami will attempt to bring back some of their side-scrolling magic with the release of Contra 4 (working title) for the Nintendo DS.
Soon, old-school Contra fans will be able to tear up the landscape with unlimited firepower on a playing field that takes up two full screens, which the company hopes will make the game's massive boss battles much more exciting. As for other changes, Contra 4 will introduce the new "grappling hook" accessory, which will allow players to greatly expand their vertical reach.
Konami has also confirmed that Contra mainstays Bill Rizer and Lance Bean will be making a return in this game, which will take place two years after Contra III: The Alien Wars. Although the Red Falcon has been annihilated, the pair must now face a new force, known only as the "Black Viper".
Konami has given the development duties of this title to WayForward Technologies, which has mostly worked on titles licensed from already-established IPs, such as SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature From the Krusty Krab and Barbie: 12 Dancing Princesses. Although the game has only been recently announced, Konami is still looking to release the title before the end of the year.
