Namco Bandai has confirmed to GamePro that its flagship PS3 fighter, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, will be seeing an online upgrade later this year. Leaderboards, new modes, and screens unveiled inside -- only on GamePro.com.
Speaking exclusively to GamePro, Namco Bandai representatives have confirmed that the company's PlayStation 3 brawler, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, will be seeing a downloadable upgrade that will add new online versus modes, online ranking and lobbies, and in-match spectating.
In addition, the Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online (the game's official name) will see two new single-player modes requested by fans: a non-stop Survival mode, and a Practice mode in which players can master their moves.
Far from being a quickie upgrade, early signs suggest that the Tekken 5 team has taken pains to polish and refine the game's online mode. When searching for games online, players will be able to choose from Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match and Friend Match.
Voice chat will be supported in all online modes, including while waiting in the lobby. Additionally, players waiting in the lobby will be able to spy on matches while waiting their turn to play, giving them a chance to scope out their future opponent's moves and strategies.
In a nod to the company's Ridge Racer 6, Tekken 5: DR Online will include an Online News Ticker that will show "weekly, monthly and overall rank leaders" in the Tekken 5 online community.
The price of the update has not yet been nailed down. But judging by a recent Famitsu story, current Tekken 5: DR owners can expect to pay a small premium to download the online expansion.
Namco Bandai representatives have also informed us that Tekken 5: DR Online will be out "later this year."
