Sony has revealed the release of another system software update for the PS3, but trust us -- it's nothing to get worked up about.

According to a message from Sony's official PlayStation.blog (as well as the multitude of PS3 owners that happened to turn on their consoles sometime today), Sony has released a software upgrade for the PS3, which will update the system's firmware to version 1.81. Of course, Sony fans must be wondering the same thing: isn't it uncharacteristic of them to update on any day besides Thursday, the day of the week usually reserved for all of Sony's software updates?
The reason is that this latest upgrade only fixes a handful of teeny tiny problem brought about by the last upgrade, version 1.80. According to PlayStation network operations director Eric Lempel, at the forefront of these problems was one of the system setting options in the cross media bar.
In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable.
Lempel then concludes by adding that his team is continuing to enhance backwards compatibility with PS2 games, which could possibly become the target for the PS3's next firmware upgrade.
