GamePro editor Vicious Sid speaks with Brian Eddy, the director behind Midway's upcoming shooter Stranglehold.
What will Inspector Tequila's arsenal look like?
Tequila's favorite weapons are dual-handed pistols, but he can use a variety of other weapons, like machine guns, shotguns, sniper riffles, and grenades. A few other cool weapons will make an appearance, such as a rocket launcher!
How does one enter "Tequila Time" and what does it do other than slow down gameplay?
Slow motion, or as we call it "Tequila Time", has two play modes: auto or manual. In auto mode it is automatically turned on and off when players are doing cool stunts with objects in the environment. Pulling off interactions that put you into Tequila Time is also very advantageous to the player for multiple reasons, but probably the best way to explain is to give you an example of gameplay. If Tequila were to slide down a banister, and then dive through the air while targeting enemies, the game would automatically go into Tequila Time, which not only gives players the advantage of being able to aim normally while everyone else is in slow-motion, but also automatically allows players to deliver more damage with their shots and receive more style points from their kills.
But some players prefer managing their Tequila time directly, so they have the option of using the manual mode, where they directly control turning Tequila time on and off when and where they see fit. However once all of your Tequila Time is used up, it takes some time to regenerate so it has to be used wisely.
What will boss fights be like? One particularly tough guy, or a vehicle, or mobs of guys?
We wanted a variety of different kinds of boss fights in Stranglehold, so the game actually has all of the above! We have bosses who use a high powered weapon that literally tears the environments apart. These high-powered weapons cut through pillars, that in turn bring down the ceiling, which forces Tequila to keep moving or be cut down in a hail of bullets, or crushed by debris. We have other bosses who actually jump on a helicopter that Tequila has to take out to beat the battle. We even have bosses that keep Tequila at bay with lots of henchmen that Tequila must fight his way through first, all the while dodging the sniper shots that are being fired at him. It was important to us to make each boss battle unique, new and interesting.
What kind of hand-to-hand combat can Inspector Tequila perform?
Throughout our development process, it's been important for us to stay true to the cinematic flare and action that John Woo's films are known for, henceforth the vast majority of the game being shooting. However, Inspector Tequila will have a basic melee combat move he uses when he gets too close to an enemy.
What's in store for multiplayer, whether online or split-screen?
We can confirm that there is multiplayer in the game, but are not ready to discuss details at this time.
What's the planned release date? Any plans for a collector's edition?
Stranglehold is scheduled for a late summer release. We are not ready to discuss any potential collector's edition plans at this time.
It's interesting that the PS3 version include the Blu-ray film Hard Boiled. That's a GREAT bonus and I hope to see more movie-licensed games take this route.
Of course, it demands the huge storage of a medium like Blu-ray, but you can't deny it's a slick extra. Will it take built-in movies to show off Blu-ray's talents?
