Eidos Interactive, owners and creators of the highly-lucrative Tomb Raider franchise, has recently announced that a version of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversay is currently in the making for the Nintendo Wii. The game, which will initially be released for PS2 and PC on June 5th, will essentially be a 10th anniversary remake of the first Tomb Raider game, originally developed back in 1996.

"The Nintendo Wii is a hugely innovative games console, and we wanted to make a special version of Anniversary to appeal to Wii owners," said Kathryn Clements, Senior Brand Manager of the Tomb Raider franchise. "The Wiimote & Nunchuck controller allows Wii gamers to control Lara in brand new, unique ways, and there are plenty of new features, to be revealed soon, which will ensure Anniversary really hits the spot - literally."

According to the company, the Wii version is already "well into development", and will represent the first Tomb Raider title to be released for Nintendo's next-gen machine. Also, in a recent interview with IGN, Eidos President and CEO Bill Gardner revealed that the Wii version will play differently from the game's other versions "because of the way the Wii remote is handled." Furthermore, Gardner indicates that this title represents the start of a closer relationship between Eidos and Nintendo.

Eidos also plans to release a version for the PlayStation Portable as well, although concrete release dates for both the Wii and PSP version have not yet been announced.
