Microsoft releases HD DVD update

An update has recently been posted for the Xbox 360's HD DVD player, allowing for more audio output options, improved video, and a smattering of other new upgrades.

If you happen to be an Xbox 360 owner with the add-on HD DVD player, expect a software update for the drive to be automatically downloaded the next time you pop in an HD DVD movie while being signed on to Xbox Live. According to a recent post on Major Nelson's Xbox Live blog, the update will contain the following improvements:
Users can now select from the following audio output formats through either TOSLINK or HDMI:
- Digital Stereo (2 channel PCM)
- Dolby Digital 5.1
- DTS 5.1
- WMA ProA digital audio output toggle for "Dynamite Range Control" has been added.
Improved HD DVD networking support
Improved HD DVD title compatibility
Improved performance with MPEG-4 AVC / H.264
1080p resolution through HDMI is now supported on the Elite console with HDCP compliant displays
Improved parental controls
Major Nelson also states that users not subscribed to Xbox Live have the option of downloading the update directly from the Xbox.com site as soon as it goes up later this week.
