THQ brings a halt to its port of Saints Row 1 on the PS3 as it focuses attention on bringing its sequel next year to both Sony and Microsoft next-gen consoles.

In a conference call with analysts today, THQ CFO Edward Zinser announced that the planned PS3 port of the free-roaming urban crime game Saints Row, which was originally due for release this quarter, has officially been cancelled.
"We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year", THQ CEO Brian Farrell later explained to analysts. "We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."
This essentially means that the company has allocated its resources from the Saints Row port at its development studio, Volition, to concentrate on the sequel. Details were scarce about Saints Row 2, currently an unofficial title for the game, but Farrell did state that the game has been in development for "some time", and would "utilize Volition's proprietary open-world engine and deliver an all-new cross-platform gaming experience."
The game is due to ship simultaneously on the PS3 and 360 sometime in 2008. GamePro will keep you updated with the latest details as soon as we find out more!
