Activision revealed today their plans for the next installment of the Guitar Hero series of games, which will add a retro twist to the franchise by revisiting one of history's campiest decades. Starting this summer on the PS2, the aptly titled Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s will strive to bring back songs made popular a generation ago.

30 classic songs across different music genres from the 80s are set to be featured in the final game, and seven of them have already been named in the company's press release. Five are cover songs:

  • I Want Candy (as made famous by Bow Wow Wow)

  • Metal Health (as made famous by Quiet Riot)

  • Round and Round (as made famous by Ratt)

  • Holy Diver (as made famous by Ronnie James Dio)

  • Heat of the Moment (as made famous by Asia)

The other two are recordings made famous by the original artists: I Ran by Flock of Seagulls and I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister. Location, guitars and celebrity characters parodying the decade are set to make up the brunt of the title's visual punch.

"The 80s features an amazing variety of rock genres from hair metal to punk to new wave, and our dedicated Guitar Hero fans will definitely appreciate the opportunity to play all the new and exciting content we've added," said RedOctane's head of publishing Dusty Welch. "As we delve deeper into the history of rock, we'll continue to offer a fresh experience and even more explosive tracks with the Guitar Hero franchise."
