Sony to unveil PS4 in 2008?

According to a covert Sony insider, plans are currently underway to make the next wave of PlayStation consoles, which may be available in just over eighteen months.

In an interview posted on GamePro last week, former Sony CEO Ken Kutaragi stated that ideas for PlayStations 4, 5, and 6 have already been conceptualized. However, new, yet still unverified sources now claim that his recent retirement has enabled him to streamline plans for a PS4 prototype sooner than anybody thought.

According to a report from Smarthouse, an unnamed Sony insider has claimed that Kutaragi's proposal for the PS4 would involve the same chipset as the PS3, but would include an extensive overhaul to the system software. This would better manage streaming content from a broadband network source, and combined with the console's existing Cell processor, this upgrade would likely supplant the PlayStation as a developer for network-based gaming entertainment in the near future.

The PS3's Cell processor has, of course, become something of an Achilles' Heel in this latest bout of console wars. Although it allows for Sony to vastly increase yield on speed as well as processor manufacturing, it has made it somewhat difficult for developers to design new games as a result. Still, Sony's unwavering dedication to the processor so far has indicated their plans to use it as the engine for most of their future console endeavors.

Kutaragi has similarly hinted to the possibility of generating entirely online-based consoles in the next couple of decades. This rumored "PS4" may act as the template behind a completely internet-driven gaming experience, and may successfully kill two of Sony's birds with one stone. First, it would cut out the middleman by allowing Sony to distribute their games directly to consumers at a lower price, and second, it would eliminate Sony's other bane: the highly lucrative used games market.

i dont understand why they made people spend all their money on a PS3 and then go and start making a ps4 when it just came out!! people spent 400 to 800 dollars on ps3 just to make a new one? it reminds me of when woody the toy was popular then came buz lite year right after!! it is not right to me....

Next generation console development should come as no surprise to anyone. After the current generation is finalized an put into production, the next round of development will begin. I wouldn't expect to see a PS4 on the market in the US for at least 3 years.

i have every ps3 edition that has come out because my dad works for sony
i have the original 20 gig,40 gig,60 gig which is in chrome got it from japan.
also I have the 80 gig motorstorm limited edditon,the mgs4 limited 80 gig edition,
i also have the uncharted 160 gig limited edition.
and yes i have the new 80 gig which was a regular 40 gig.
i have a huge bedroom but NOT all of my ps3 are hooked up only the mgs4 edition which is my favorite.
we also have about 4 regular ps3 40 gig just for blue ray.

i think they are making ps4 too fast. sony and microsoft should just combine xbox 360 and ps3 to make a new console that can play play station games and xbox games. now thats something i would buy.

next gen gaming is gong to be a major breakthrough that we wont se for 4 to 6 years ppl. so dont get ur panties in wad u want to see current next gen progress go to www.ted.com and look at the guy whos using a wii remote for a digital white board look i work in the general development office at sony and thes guys dont even kno wat they want it to look like yet so calm down its goin to be a long time before we see the ps4 but it will be worth it when it does drop
