Rockstar: GTA IV for 360 held back by lack of hard drive

A recent discussion with the developers of Grand Theft Auto IV reveals that the fact that not every Xbox 360 is equipped with a storage medium is putting the studio between a rock[star] and a hard [drive].

According to a recent interview on Official PlayStation Magazine (care of CVG), Rockstar revealed that its development efforts for the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV have been stifled by the console's lack of a guaranteed hard drive on every system.

"On PS3, you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage," said Rockstar creative VP Dan Houser. "[W]hereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format."

"Does that create limitations?" he asked himself. "Yep."

Of course, House also admits that both consoles present their fair share of challenges, and "both have their own particular pleasures and pains". The team is reportedly still working hard on solving as many of the development riddles presented by the next-generation of consoles as they can.

At the moment, Rockstar is working primarily on the Xbox 360 version of the game, so it's been rumored that a PS3 release may be out in stores at a later date. However, at this early stage of development, it may be far too soon to tell.
