A number of unspecified websites have egg on their face after a strange hoax of indeterminate origin made its way onto the gaming news wires.
By Eugene Huang
If you managed to surf through your usual requisite number of gaming news websites (including GamePro.com, of course) and came across an oddly-concocted announcement for Excite Truck 2, don't believe a word of it. For now, at least.
It seems that an unknown number of internet pranksters posted a faux press release today detailing the imminent arrival of a sequel for Excite Truck for the Wii. Starting off by proclaiming the game's online 6-player functionality, the fake announcement went on to illustrate the game's other features:
"A bunch of new tracks will be playable with 8 environments, among which the brand new couple of tracks taking place on the Moon. Be sure that you will take a flight at low gravity!"
A bit too late for April 1st, guys.
Although their questionable usage of the English language may have been a dead giveaway, a number of gaming websites were unfortunately caught in the hoaxsters' diabolical trap. Most legitimate articles referring to the game have since been taken down, but a scant few remain. Being strong believers in fair play, GamePro will not disseminate the names of the websites that got "royally pwned".
Rest assured that, if and when an authentic announcement for Excite Truck 2 gets released, GamePro will be all over it. After checking it twice, of course.
