Wii: once again #1 next-gen console for March 2007
A recent announcement from Nintendo claims that the console developer has taken both first and third place in last month's sales figures for the American market. According to independent data provided by the NPD group, the Nintendo DS was sold to over half a million American buyers last month, while the Nintendo Wii became the best-selling next-gen home console of March 2007, selling 259,000 units. Besides the DS, only Sony's PlayStation 2 system sold more than the Wii, managing sales of 280,000 units during the same period.
These figures continue the trend of what looks to be a stellar year for Nintendo, as the company also states that they have sold more video game systems than all other console manufacturers combined so far this calendar year.
"The message delivered by both Wii and Nintendo DS is the same one," says Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America. "Innovation is compelling both current gamers and new gamers to experience a new way to play. Nintendo is bringing gaming back to the masses."
These sales figures come in spite of worldwide shortages for both systems, although Nintendo has stated that it has ramped up hardware production for this month in preparation for the fervent demand caused by such games as Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, which hits retail stores this Sunday. As for the Wii, Nintendo expects their sales to rise through the recent release of Super Paper Mario and the future release of Mario Party 8.
[UPDATE: New information from the actual figures from the NPD Group indicate that the Wii was actually the third best-selling console in March, not the second. The article has since been altered. Sorry for the confusion.]
