Isn't it sad how, in today's gaming world where the FPS remains king of the heap, very little regard is given to the Pac-Man champion? The days of pizza parlor arcade machines have long since passed, leaving behind nothing but memories and an old dilapidated 8-track tape of Pac-Man Fever. Well, starting next week, old school arcade gamers will be able to show the world that how much of a baaad muthawakka they can be by participating in the Pac-Man World Championship, presented by a collaboration between Namco Bandai, Microsoft, and Quiznos.

In the span of two weeks, owners of the Xbox Live Arcade version of Pac-Man will be locked in a free-for-all battle for the top spot on the Pac-Man leaderboards, and the top finalists from around the world will be flown to New York City to compete in the finals for the honor of being crowned Pac-Man World Champion by the game's creator, Toru Iwatani.

The competition will begin on April 25th and end on May 9th. After registering on http://www.xboxlivetournament.com, players with a full version of Pac-Man for XBLA can begin competing for the top position on the game's leaderboards. In the interest of fairness, previous leaderboard scores will be completely deleted.

Out of the top leaderboard winners, a total of nine finalists will be chosen to compete in the finals in New York City on June 5th. Two finalists will be from America, two will be from Europe, and the following countries/areas will produce one finalist each: Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and Mexico. There will also be a special invitation given to the winner of the Pac-Man FANatic contest -- entrants within the U.S. and Canada can win by submitting a video explaining why they are the "ultimate Pac-Man fan".

In addition to being crowned champion, the finalist stands to win 26 years of free Quiznos toasted subs (one sandwich per week for 26 years), 100,000 Microsoft Points, an original Xbox 360 made from a special Pac-Man design, and other content released on Xbox Live.

Full contest rules and other related information can be obtained on http://www.xboxlivetournament.com starting April 25th.
