Although GamePro revealed the announcement regarding the Prince of Persia movie a few months ago, neither a release date nor a director had been announced at the time. But according to a recent report from IESB, both have just come to light.

The project, headed by a collaboration between Jerry Bruckheimer Productions and Walt Disney Pictures, has recently hired Michael Bay to direct the film, who has worked with Bruckheimer on such films as Armageddon, The Rock, and the Bad Boys series. It is reported that Bay will begin working on the film as soon as Transformers, his current summer blockbuster project, is completed.

Titled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the movie will be based on the 2003 game that brought the Prince of Persia series back from the dead. However, Jordan Mechner, the series' creator, has stated that the transformation from game to film will not be exact.

"Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story -- much as 'Pirates' [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride," Mechner said in an interview.

Although it had been originally announced with a hopeful 2008 release date, Prince of Persia fans may have to wait a year longer. Bruckheimer has since announced that the project has been slated for a release of Summer 2009.
