Bethesda Softworks has recently released a beta patch for the PC version of Shivering Isles, the expansion set to their hit game, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This stopgap patch aims to fix a recently discovered bug that causes severe problems to the game after extended play.
The bug is due to problems in the game's coding, in which NPCs occupy areas of the game's programming script, which prevents new items from being created within the game. Depending on the power of the PC it runs on, play of over 50 hours can cause numerous game-related problems to occur, such as shop owners being unable to give items, quests becoming unfinishable, and numerous crashes.
Although the patch is intended to stop the bug from occurring, Bethesda has made it clear that the patch is only a temporary solution to address the current situation.
"This is a beta patch," Bethesda's support site points out. "We strongly recommend you backup your save games and understand it may be necessary to re-install the game when the final patch is released. Additionally, you may experience issues with this patch."
The patch can be downloaded at Bethesda's Shivering Isles site, which can be found here.
Bethesda has so far confirmed that this crippling bug does not affect the Xbox 360 version of the expansion pack, but the developers are continuing to look into the matter.
