Whoo-wee, do we have a mess on our hands at the Download Digest this week, folks. It seems as if all three companies decided to take a breather all at the same time, resulting in one of the poorest showings of downloadable content in the short history of this console generation. Want evidence? Just take a look at what's being offered this week:
Wii
In a rare showing from Nintendo this week, only one new game was made available for the Virtual Console this Monday, and it just so happens to be Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire. Based on the famous Chinese novel known by the same name, Wall of Fire was the series' fourth installment and introduced a slew of new features to the franchise. Most prominent amongst these features was the enhancement of the city siege portions of battle, which allowed players to develop advanced weapons such as rams and catapults. Additions like these that have led some fans to declare it one of the best games in the long and storied history of the RTK series.
Still, it's only one game. Nintendo has a lot of explaining to do regarding this week's selection, and has to come up with a pretty good excuse as to where the other 2-3 Virtual Console games happened to go.
By the way, Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire can be purchased for 800 Wii Points.
Xbox 360
Microsoft is the only company to come through in its pledge of at least one game a week for Xbox Live Arcade. This week's entry is none other than Jetpac Refueled, a modern-day remake of the popular game Jetpac, previously developed for several computer systems in the U.K. once upon a time. Yes, it contains the original game in all of its shoot-'em-up glory, but this new XBLA version also boasts 128 levels of enhanced gameplay with brand new HD graphics.
Jetpac Refueled will be available this Wednesday for 400 Microsoft Points.
PlayStation 3
Although Sony has not made any similar promises regarding the release of new downloadable content, this marks the third week of no-shows since WipeOut was made available for the PSP on March 8th (unless you somehow count Folding@Home as a downloadable game). So far, Calling All Cars has been pushed back from this week to April 12th, and Mortal Kombat II, which was once promised a March release, still has yet to receive an official release date. With absolute zilch on the immediate horizon, one wouldn't be crazy in suggesting that Sony seriously rethink its strategy regarding the distribution of its exclusive online content.
