Nintendo today verified that GameSpy, a branch of IGN Entertainment offering online video game services and software, will power the WiFi multiplayer for Wii. This partnership brings with it the technology to include community attributes into games, such as friends lists, complex matchmaking abilities, and leaderboards.

Pokemon Battle Revolution, the first game to support this system, is set for release on the 25th of June.

The pairing between WiFi for Wii and GameSpy come as little surprise to those in the DS wireless community, who already use GameSpy for their information needs.

"This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection," Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime says. "Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy's technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment."

GameSpy originally began life as QSpy - software that let PC gamers efficiently look for Quake games on the internet - in 1996. The company expanded to GameSpy and then in 2000 GameSpy Arcade, the widely used software that allowed users to search for and connect to multiplayer games around the globe.
