PSP redesign confirmed?

Sony both confirms and denies plans to release a redesigned version of the PSP.

Speaking yesterday at the launch of the PSP in Education initiative, SCE UK managing director Ray Maguire announced the company's plans to launch a redesigned version of the PSP at some point in the future.

Maguire noted that no design changes would be made to the size of PSP's screen, which is "fixed". A reduction in the size and weight of the console is planned, but no specific details have been provided, and Maguire wouldn't offer any details on when exactly the redesign might hit the shelves.

This would put the handheld machine in line with Sony's practises with its previous consoles, which have all seen a "smaller, lighter" redesign at some point in their lifespan. The PS-X saw a redesign and a name change to PSone in 2000, five-and-a-half years after its original Japanese launch, and the slim-line PS2 was released four years after the PlayStation 2's launch.

After the conference a Sony spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that, although there are no "immediate changes" planned for the PSP beyond regular firmware updates, "In the longest term, of course we are always looking at ways to continue our platform development, and this normal business practice is what Ray was referring to."
