Love him or hate him, you have to respect Sony's Phil Harrison. All eyes were fixed firmly upon him for this afternoon's keynote address at GDC, and he didn't miss a beat, unveiling the PlayStation Home and Little Big Planet to what eventually became a raucous group of interested onlookers.
The PlayStation Home is a free downloadable program that will take social networking to the next level. Users can create a customizable polygonal avatar to suit their tastes, as well as decorate their apartment units with all manners of furniture and accessories. Users can explore the insides of their apartments, such as the trophy room, which will contain full-size statues that showcase their gaming accomplishments. Or, alternatively, they can invite their friends over for a party and/or jump straight into an online multiplayer game. But the scope of this program doesn't end there, as the PlayStation home literally gives PS3 owners a whole world to explore.
But while the PlayStation Home did much to excite the crowd, what really brought the house down at the keynote address was the introduction of Little Big Planet, Sony's new virtual playground. This open-ended sandbox game gives users the ability to piece together their own levels, which they can freely explore with tiny rag doll avatars also of their own creation. The demonstration of the game, which featured a gaming foursome running through a complex obstacle course, invoked cheers throughout the crowd.
