All About Aliens
"In Crysis, there has been no contact with extra terrestrials before initial contact so, believe it or not, they are referred to simply as 'the aliens,'" Cevat continues. "We call them aliens, because for us, Crysis is a realistic sci-fi game. Their language is so exotic we don't even know what they would call themselves -- that is, if we could take the time to talk to them." For shooter fans, it should come as no surprise that these E.T.s don't seem very keen on the fine art of conversation.
Crysis's blood-thirsty aliens thrive in a freezing, zero-G environment, which helps explain the mysterious freeze gun depicted in the latest screenshots. You can expect that a large chunk of the gameplay will center around alien technology. But when it comes to the weaponry, Crytek wants to reinvent the core components of the tired shooter genre.
Future Kill
"We decided that we wanted players to be able to customize on the fly (rather than in a non-immersive menu)," Cevat explains. "So we took the concept of the rail system (modular attachment mount points) and applied this to our game." Cevat details the different customization options currently in Crysis, which so far include scopes, lamps, laser sights, and, of course, silencers. "In most cases, players can take an item from one weapon and put it on another," Cevat clarifies. "There may be no obvious reason to put a sniper scope on a shotgun, but it makes for really interesting gameplay options."
Cevat also details a new feature called "tactical munitions," in which bullets can be controlled after they've been fired. There are a number of different ways to utilize tactical munitions in Crysis. "Sleep mode is a quick and silent way to down an enemy... you can then activate the trigger and put that target to sleep," Cevat gushes. "And distract mode emits a sound that is very useful for distracting enemies away from your position." The gameplay in Crysis is built around these concepts. Even better, it's all carrying over into multiplayer.
Beyond mere firepower, the game's Nano Muscle Suit is your most valuable weapon in Crysis. Based on real-world military designs, this super suit is not as far fetched as you might first think. "Its main function is to enhance the soldiers' abilities in the front line -- strength, armor, speed, and stealth -- all vital functions to the soldiers of the future," Cevat says. But it's not just Halo's Mjolnir armor version 2.0, as the Nano Muscle Suit has an onboard fusion reactor to that channels energy for use with different functions of the suit.
