Game Characters Who Captured Our Hearts

What makes a great game character and why do we love them so? AngelofChaos spits the truth on the most memorable video game characters.

Throughout the history of gaming there have been many heroes and heroines we could relate to in one form or another, but which were the most memorable? GamePro.com community member AngelofChaos delves into the matter and highlights the top ten game characters we'll never forget. When you're done reading, join the discussion here!

10. Tommy Vercetti (GTA: VC):

What's not to like? You could hi-jack any vehicle, man any weapon, and beat-up anyone that looked at you funny. His smart-ass attitude and sleek Miami Vice duds have made him very memorable.

9. Dante (DMC):

Dante defines cool and well... metro sexuality. There is no equal to his amusing attitude, sword and gun play, or devil spasms that rain destruction.

8. Link (All Zelda Games):

Link is one of Nintendo's favorite and most popular characters of all time. This quiet, yet strong young lad has gone through an incredible amount of adventures and his arsenal of weapons is extraordinarily large. How the Hell can he carry all that crap? Unrivaled in swordsmanship, his sheer tenacity has carried him through many trials. Keep it up Link; we'll see you on the Wii.

7. Ratchet (Ratchet and Clank Games):

Who knew that blowing $#&! up with a... err... Lombax could be so much fun? Running around pumping anything that twitches full of holes is ridiculously entertaining. Ratchet always has a good attitude and if there was a mission of dire importance, he'd be all over it.

6. Viewtiful Joe (Viewtiful Joe):

Hen shin a go-go baby! That line sounds so corny, yet we all love it. Joe's time-manipulating powers and smart mouth comments makes Viewtiful Joe one of those games you can't put down. Who would have thought fighting crime in bright red tights and a pink ribbon could be so fun.

5. Chun-Li (Street Fighter Games):

Chun-Li is hot and kicks high, what's not to love? She could perform gravity defying spin kicks and flaunt her skin tight blue outfit at the same time. In the world of Street Fighter, she'll kick anyone's ass, period.

4. Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden):

This guy has a lot of guts and a crapload of skill. The controls are damn-near perfect so you can slash and smash enemies with ninja-quickness. He has a very calm attitude, and he looks super sweet. Despite some insane odds, Ryu has the mad skills to get through any pinch, and he deserves kudos for that.

3. Luigi (Too Many Games...):

I know what you're thinking. "Why the Hell Luigi? Mario is the shiznit!" In response to that, I say, screw Mario. Luigi has always been my favorite of the Mario Bros. Luigi had all-around better skills than Mario. He could jump higher and longer, could shoot GREEN fireballs, and was taller. Mario doesn't have jack on that. Mario has had enough glory, let his cooler bro have the spotlight for once.

2. Auron (FFX and Kingdom Hearts):

Definitely one of the most popular FF characters of all time. Many adored his silent, waste-no-words attitude. Despite being a bit old, and having use in only one arm, he could still wield a behemoth of a sword and swing it like a wild man. His skills are incredible, and he always aims to protect.

1. Mega Man Zero (MMZ games for GBA):

I bet you're surprised to see this guy here. Personally, I never did like his attitude in the MMX games because I found him a little too arrogant for a hero. However, in the MMZ games he's an entirely different character. He can perform an incredible amount of skills and sports no arrogance whatsoever. He will do any mission without question and doesn't whine. He just does his job to help those who awakened him. Despite some crazy obstacles and plot-twists, this guy remains calm and kicks ass in a variety of ways. Truly the heart of a hero.

Great top ten, AngelofChaos. Feel free to submit your top ten game characters here.
