Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Producer Ryo Mito takes some time out of his busy schedule to illustrate why long time fans of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai series won't be disappointed with this sequel.
With Atari simultaneously announcing two Dragon Ball Z games some of the fans may be confused trying to differentiate the two titles apart. Luckily for us, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Producer Ryo Mito takes some time out of his busy schedule to illustrate why long time fans of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai series won't be disappointed with this sequel.
GamePro: Greetings Mr. Mito, Thank you for taking the time to answer our Q&A interview. What do you think distinguishes Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 compared to the other Dragon Ball Z titles, such as Super DBZ?
Ryo Mito: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 has a rich story mode, full 3D battle fields, and is a fun game for people who are new to the franchise or established DBZ fans. With over 100 characters, there will be something there for everyone to like. Super DBZ is more of a "hardcore" fighting game. There are fewer characters, only 18, but players will have to master the unique fighting moves for each of these characters to really master the game.
GP: How difficult was it to include over 100 Dragon Ball characters into this title? Do they all have fully fleshed out story mode plots and unique game engine move sets? Will we see original Dragon Ball characters?
RM: The individualization of the vast number of characters was difficult. We have worked on individualizing each character through various measures. For example, adjusting the super moves, speed, power, and stamina of each character, along with differentiating their movements from other characters. There are more than 100 characters, and each of them will appear in the story mode. They will all be involved in the game in various ways. We would like you to pay close attention to how each character differs, as we have put much concentration on creating each and every character to be unique. Although there will be no new characters exclusive to this game, a handful of minor characters, which are sure to surprise and delight fans, will appear.
GP: Can you confirm any of the new additional characters?
RM: Lord Slug -the Super Namek- and Android 13, who are both characters from the DBZ movies, will be added, along with a number of other new characters. Just like in the anime, Slug will be capable of transforming into a giant version of himself during battle. This means that although he is a single character, he will have two dramatically different fighting styles before and after transformation. Android 13 will be capable of transforming into Super Android 13 during battle. Like Slug, Android 13's fighting style will also change from a speed-oriented character before transformation to become more power-oriented after transformation.
GP: How deep will the customizations features for the characters be? Will Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 have the same amount of customization features or will it be expanded for this sequel.
RM: As in the previous game, the customization feature for the characters will be achieved by developing the Z items. However, their usage and effects have increased. In addition, we've added what we call "character passwords." Once the player customizes his or her character, they can tell the password of that character to their friends, allowing them to "reconstruct" the player's character on their own console by simply inputting the password. We have added this feature in hopes that players will release information of their customized characters on the Internet.
GP: How religiously will the story mode plots follow the Dragon Ball Z manga/anime? Will there be room for alternate what if stories?
RM: The Dragon Ball Z manga and anime will be the base for story mode, however, what if scenarios will be introduced as well. The story mode is not simply going to be about following the storyline and encountering battles along the way. It will incorporate RPG-like features such as conversing with other characters, mini-games, etc.
