10 Hot Games for 2006

We settle on a list of games we're looking forward to playing in 2006.

With the new year comes the promise of new games. The editors of GamePro got together and after much gnashing of teeth, fronting, and whining, we settled on this list of games we're looking forward to playing in 2006.

10. Hitman: Blood Money
Will kill for pay.
Platform(s): PS2, Xbox, PC

No, it wasn't Grand Theft Auto that revolutionized "open sandbox" gameplay. Hitman has that honor, and the series continues to be a...er, hit with wannabe assassins. New ways to sanction a target, slicker visuals, and a compelling story line all add up to an unforgettable sanction--even if it is on current-gen systems.

9. Metroid Prime: Hunters
Scoring with Samus
Platform(s): DS

Lara Croft isn't going to be the only woman in search of ancient artifacts in 2006. This big game for Nintendo's little system sees Samus Aran racing to the outer reaches of the galaxy to explore the remains of a long extinct warrior culture for relics that hold vast power. The thing is-Samus isn't the only one who's in the hunt. This full-fledged version of the DS pack-in demo promises a mean single-player experience, but it's the wireless four-player multiplayer combat that has everyone jazzed.

8. Tomb Raider: Legend
For love of older women
Platform(s): PS2, Xbox

Oh yes, THAT Tomb Raider. Lady Lara Croft is on the comeback trail, and curiosity alone is enough to win her a spot on the most-watched list for 2006. This will the first non-Core developed Tomb Raider episode as Eidos hands the franchise's reins over to Crystal Dynamics in California. The globetrotting adventuress returns to familiar turf in South America to seek out ancient artifacts, but if Lara's going to score with gamers this time around that had best be the only thing that remains the same about the game.

7. Jaws Unleashed
We be sushi.
Platform(s): PS2, Xbox, PC

Ecco gets some teeth in this third person...er, shark action game. Your insatiable appetite for man-meat as a Great White has a (sort of) noble cause: evil humanity is infringing on your territory and dirtying the waters with oil drilling, and it is your duty to kick them out. Others threats jab at your skin, including dolphins, hammerhead sharks, and boats. So it's the same cheesy premise as the movies--but when's the last time you've played in an aquatic sandbox?

6. The Godfather
Lucca Brazzi sleeps with the fishes...again.
Platform(s): PS2, Xbox

This is all about the good 'ol days before gangsters became "gangsta's." Trading on the classic movie series, the game enables you to play a "soldier" in the Corleone crime family and challenges you to rise through the ranks by any means possible. James Caan, Robert Duvall, and the Godfather himself Marlon Brando make virtual audio cameos, and film buffs will be able to see most of the famous scenes reenacted but from a different point of view. The big question here is how much muscle the 1940's Mafiosi tale can muster in 2006.
