Long range assaults often fail due to improper weapon selection, or an over-reliance on dual-firing configurations. Remember: knowledge is power!

Sniper Rifle/Beam Rifle
The Beam Rifle has an edge over the human Sniper Rifle for two reasons: it doesn't need to be reloaded, and it's capable of firing two shots in rapid succession before overheating. Otherwise, both guns are identically devastating at long range. One headshot, or two body shots, will kill a fully shielded opponent. Both sniper weapons, however, are lousy in close-quarters combat.

Rocket Launcher
A dominating force in medium-range combat, many players forget that the scope-equipped Rocket Launcher can zoom in to help target distant foes. Better yet, it can home in on any vehicle in the game, even from a great distance. Simply target the enemy vehicle, wait for the crosshairs to turn red, and hold the Fire button. When you release the Fire button, the rocket will seek out and destroy the enemy vehicle with one shot (Wraith and Scorpion tanks require two shots).

Combo: Dual SMG
Though not usually considered a potent combo at longer ranges, dual SMGs can inflict serious damage if you know how to use them. Firing both SMGs at once is fine for crushing close-range enemies, but the accuracy is miserable at longer ranges. Instead, if you see a distant enemy, fire just one of your SMGs. The accuracy still sucks, but you'll cripple your enemy's shields. Better yet, you'll have another SMG to fall back on when your first needs reloading, or if you suddenly need to double your firepower. This technique is surprisingly effective, so make it a mainstay.

Combo: Dual Magnums
In the right hands, dual Magnums (aka Dual Maggies) inflict more damage than any other combo in Halo 2 at medium-to-long range. Be absolutely sure you keep your distance and relentlessly aim for enemy noggins; body shots just don't inflict enough damage. At first, firing both Magnums quickly is tough--one helpful trick is to tap the very tips of the triggers, where they come to a point. Deuce Maggies are devastating on Magnum-friendly levels like Lockout, Foundation and Ivory Tower, but ammo scarcity (Magnum rounds are hard to come by) will cause problems on other levels. Practice, practice, practice!
