The Halo 2 Weapon Compendium

Tired of getting owned on Xbox Live? Say no more--we feel your pain. That's why we created this comprehensive research tool to help you kick ass at any range.

Close Range
At close range (in this case, just close enough to launch a melee attack), it's important to circle-strafe around your opponent in order to dodge his shots. And don't forget your Melee attack--one whack will slaughter an unshielded opponent!

Energy Sword
Duh. This melee powerhouse is nigh-unstoppable at close range; two regular slashes will kill a fully armored opponent. But the infamous lunge attack will kill a normal foe with just one hit. To lunge, simply aim the Sword (at a close-to-medium range opponent), wait for the reticule to turn red, and press Fire. The lunge attack is especially helpful at medium range, where it can quickly close the gap between you and a retreating foe. With practice, you can travel across otherwise impossible jumps (such as the rooftops of Lockout) by targeting a foe on the other side while in mid-air. The lunge attack will usually propel you across the wide chasm.

Shotgun
The only close range weapon capable of standing toe-to-toe with the Energy Sword, period. The secret to getting one-hit kills with the Shotgun? Wait until you're almost touching your opponent before firing, and emphasize sneak attacks. When you're faced with an opponent at medium range, don't bother shooting unless your opponent is visibly unshielded--move closer before firing, toss a grenade, or simply retreat.

Combo: SMG and Magnum
One of the few dual-wield combos that can easily deal out massive damage at close range. As a nice bonus, this combo doesn't require superhuman dexterity; just blast away with the SMG and land headshots with the Magnum (note: you may feel more comfortable with the Magnum in your right hand). Sadly, this combo becomes less useful at a distance, and the reload times are somewhat lengthy. Still, this combo is a favorite among Xbox Live players for a reason. Master it.

Combo: SMG and Plasma Rifle
Lethal. The logic is simple: the Plasma Rifle melts your opponent's shields in seconds, while the SMG provides a quick kill. You'll have a little more luck if you can squeeze off a quick, accurate burst from the Plasma Rifle before firing both guns; the first Plasma volley will hugely soften your opponent's shields, making them extra-vulnerable to your final onslaught. Headshots also help.
