Game of the Week [12/08/03]: Pac-Man Vs.

Bust out the disco balls and get ready for the Pac Attack!

There are few gaming icons that have been with us for as many years as Pac-Man. While there have been a few titles that launched him into the action/adventure world of Mario and Sonic, it?s not until now that we can experience the original masterpiece from a brand new perspective?the social perspective.

Pac-Man Vs. casts one player as the spherical hero trying to clear the board of those oh so familiar dots while avoiding the ghosts. That?s the familiar part. The twist is that three of your friends play the role of the ghosts who are actively trying to track you down while steering clear when Pac-Man powers up. However many times you?ve played the classic original, nothing prepares you for the feel of being hunted by actual humans or taking charge of the enemy ghosts you had run from all your life.

The Pac-Man player uses the screen and controller of the Game Boy Advance (connected to the GameCube via the GBA/GC cable) to maneuver around in relative secrecy while each of the ghost players has a small spotlight around their character, limiting the field of vision. Whichever ghosts captures Pac-Man becomes Pac-Man in the next round. The player accomplishing this task the most wins the game. To say the end result is insanely fun is a gross understatement.

Making Pac-Man a multiplayer game is such a brilliant idea, it's amazing that no one ever thought of it before now.

You have a choice to make when purchasing Pac-Man Vs. as it is only available as a bonus disc packed in new Namco GameCube titles. The choices are I-Ninja ($39.99), R: Racing Evolution ($49.99), and Pac-Man World 2: Player?s Choice Bundle ($19.99). If you?re predisposed to any, well your path is set. The contents break down as follows: I-Ninja is a cute action/adventure title with a robed warrior prone to pulling off extreme sports-like maneuvers such as grinding rails; R: Racing Evolution is the highest profile release and is the re-birth of the Ridge Racer series; Pac-Man World 2 is a relatively well-received action/adventure title with a nice low price. I?d go with R: Racing Evolution myself, but the Pac-Man World 2 bundle is a hard bargain to pass up.

Also keep in mind that in addition to the game and a GameCube (duh), you?ll need three GameCube controllers, a GBA, and a GBA/GC connector. Obviously cost is a factor if you don?t already own some of these items. Still, even with these hurdles, social gamers are highly recommended to get in on some Vs. action. Doing the Pac-Man dance is, as always, optional.
